Prime Ice Fishing? We Got It

Ice fishing in the Hub

Across the Adirondack Hub, you’ll find quiet snow-covered forests cut open by vast wide-open flat spaces… wait, those are lakes! While our favorite paddle paradises freeze over for winter, they transform into havens for hard-water fishing, or ice fishing. Villages of shanties and tents cover many icy surfaces, making homes away from home for fishermen and women looking for the perfect bite. While the fishing is prime and it's oh-so-tempting to just stake out and wait to fill your cooler, there’s so much more to each region, from thrilling wintry attractions to cozy corners with flavors that make you forget the icy temps.

Lake Harris

Lake Harris is an expansive lake in Newcomb, bringing premier fishing to your next outing. Framed by the nearby High Peaks, you’ll be transported to a quiet oasis of snow and ice, with just the sounds of nearby wildlife to keep you company. In terms of fishing, you won’t leave empty-handed. The lake proudly supports a self-sustaining population of walleye after being experimentally stocked from 2004 until 2008. Other species you should keep an eye out for? Northern pike and yellow perch!

Off the ice

Away from the lake, and just down the road, take an outdoor walk through a classic Adirondack Great Camp - Great Camp Santanoni. The camp is the only publicly-owned Great Camp in the Adirondacks and boasts 13,000 acres of natural forest, farmhouses, cabins, and main lodge. The road to the camp in winter is only accessible via snowshoes and cross-country skis, so come prepared!

Newcomb Cafe and Campground

Just steps from the lake, the Newcomb Cafe and Campground offers cozy dining and home-cooked meals, making it the perfect place to relax and recharge. Whether you're kicking off your day or winding down with friends after a fishing trip, this spot serves up hearty portions of delicious breakfast and lunch. Open Thursday through Sunday, it’s the ideal place to fuel up for the day ahead or wrap up your outdoor adventures!

Minerva Lake

The smaller lake on this list, Minerva Lake is just as mighty as its neighbors! What it lacks in miles, it makes up for in quality and quantity of fish! While you cast, you’ll find Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Walleye, to name a few. With a few quaint islands at its center, you’ll be set off in your private ice fishing escape as you wait for your catch to arrive.

Off the ice

Roughly a 20-minute drive away lies one of the biggest ski mountains in Upstate New York. Gore Mountain - sister location to Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington - offers 25 miles of downhill skiing, spanning 108 trails, 14 lifts, and a 2537′ vertical. With 4 peaks making up the mountain, you’ll find the perfect trail, from easy-going greens to double black diamonds for adrenaline junkies. Head into the lodge when you’re done for some fireside hot cocoa or stop into the Tannery Restaurant for a complete refresh.

Sporty's Iron Duke Saloon

Looking for possibly the coolest bar in the region? Sporty's Iron Duke Saloon will transport you into a world filled with Harley Davidson memorabilia, antiques, and a bar stocked with your favorite brews after a day in the chilly temps. Their patrons rave about the grilled cheeseburger, or the "huge" turkey club, among the tasty comfort foods to choose from. When you're not feasting, feast your eyes on their extensive motorcycle collection!

Schroon Lake

No stranger to hard water, Schroon Lake is home to one of the longest-running, classic ice fishing events in the Adirondacks. With 9 miles of ice to cover, you’ll have plenty of space to set up camp and get to fishing! Speaking of camps, when you get a glimpse of the lake, you may be surprised to find little villages of shacks and shanties sprawled across the ice, that’s just how good the bounty is here. Keep your eyes peeled for Lake Trout, Landlocked Salmon, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Smelt, Northern Pike, Black Crappie, Brown Bullhead, Rock Bass, Pumpkinseed, and Yellow Perch.

Off the ice

After or around your fishing trip, experience something unique to Schroon Lake and the wild scenery here. Tucked away in a hidden corner of the region lies Natural Stone Bridge and Caves, an opportunity to explore an elaborate system of underground caves and natural stone structures that take you deeper into the Adirondacks' wild history. In winter, visitors have access via snowshoes only. You’ll get to see how the ice and snow react over the unique terrain, and explore over 14 miles of trails, including walks along the river, sinkholes, ledges, and even two mountain tops.

Sticks & Stones Wood Fired Bistro & Bar

If you’ve left the lake looking like an abominable snowman, we know you need a hot meal near a fireplace, stat! Sticks and Stones Wood-Fired Bistro and Bar will have you thawing out in no time, with a savory treat for your tastebuds to boot. Their menu covers all the bases for a perfect winter meal. Order the French onion soup (going first because I’m extremely biased), wings, or blackened beef tips to start you off. For the main event, choose from the pretzel burger, Cajun pasta, chicken parmesan, or their 12. Oz New York Strip. It wouldn’t be a wood-fired establishment without pizza, so build your own or order one of their specialty pies.

Come for the fish, stay for the towns

Wherever you cast a line in the Adirondack Hub, you’ll find that the region is brimming with prime hard-water fishing, from our sprawling lakes to quaint secret hideaways, you’ll get your day’s worth of catches in no time. While you’re off the lake, experience everything each town has to offer within minutes.

Recipe for the Ultimate ADK Ski Trip

There's no fun like ski trip fun

Winter is a special time in the Adirondacks, and while there are tons of activities and events happening throughout the region, there's nothing quite like a ski trip. What makes a ski vacation special? Well, every last bit of it, from fresh mountain air and spectacular views, the rush of flying downhill, sharing time with family and friends old and new, to facing your fears and conquering new challenges. Add in the atmosphere on the mountain, the food and beer, leaving the mountain tired and happy after a great day of skiing, and knowing you're headed toward a fun yet relaxing evening, a tasty meal, and a luxuriously cozy and restful overnight stay. There's just nothing like it, and the Adirondack Hub has everything that makes a ski trip phenomenal. It's all here, where big ski adventure meets classic Adirondack charm.

Recipe for a no-fail, best-ever Adirondack ski trip

Check out our simple recipe for a no-fail, best-ever Adirondack ski trip that you'll be talking about for years to come! You'll need two main ingredients: a top-notch Adirondack ski resort (we recommend Gore Mountain) and an amazing place to use as your winter basecamp (we recommend The Lodge at Schroon Lake). Combine these two key ingredients and you'll be in for a guaranteed fun, stress-free Adirondack ski vacation. Much of the work is already done for you – the lodge offers seasonal packages customized for skiers that include items like a complimentary shuttle to and from the mountain so you can leave the driving to someone else while you focus on the fun on the slopes.

Ski and ride Gore Mountain-style

Fresh, cold mountain air, the sparkle of snow, the sound of your skis, and that best run of the day that you know you'll keep thinking about for days to come. Ahhh, if only every day could be a bluebird day on the slopes. Those daydreams you keep having about the best-ever ski experience in the Adirondacks are just waiting to become your reality. Boasting 14 lifts and 108 trails, Gore Mountain has the largest trail and lift network in New York! Long known and much loved for its wide range of trail and terrain diversity, skiers and snowboarders have plenty to explore throughout Gore's four summits and 2,537-foot vertical drop. Whether you like cruisers, steeps, glades, or scenic views, each of the mountain areas at Gore has something spectacular and memorable. You'll also find some of the tastiest on-mountain dining here at Gore Mountain, so when you need to refuel, you've got several delicious, fun options to choose from. Pro tip: Don't leave without a sweet treat and a warm beverage from the waffle cabin!

Back to base camp

After your day on the slopes, The Lodge at Schroon Lake has everything you need to get yourself refreshed and recharged – and more. Much more! You'll relish the return to your luxurious base camp at the lodge, where you can unload your equipment and settle in for an evening that's just right for you. The lodge is full of classic Adirondack charm, newly renovated and decorated with a perfect blend of rustic and modern, and has that wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere that feels as though you are delightfully "away at camp." Take a swim in the indoor heated pool, relax in the sauna, or soothe those tired muscles with a soak in the hot tub. Build a snowman or stargaze under the tall pines overlooking the lake, roast marshmallows and make s'mores at one of the outdoor fireplaces, enjoy dinner at The Brown Swan, the lodge's restaurant, or settle in with a good book in one of the lodge's cozy indoor public spaces. If you've still got energy to burn, there's an awesome game room with billiards and table games, and a fitness center.

Don't worry, be happy

Of course, the best getaways are the ones when you can leave your worries behind, but every trip has a few unknowns. To ease your mind, here are a few more things you don't need to spend any time stressing about:

Haven't ever been on skis before or feeling nervous about getting back out there? Don't be intimidated! Gore Mountain's Snow Sports School offers programs and private lessons, so whether you're completely new to the sport or have a long history on the slopes and are just looking to improve on a specific skill, there's an instructor who can help you to meet your goals.

Did you bring along someone who was up for a trip to the mountains but not a skier? There are plenty of great options for other winter outdoor fun in the area. For snowshoeing, Mt Severance in Schroon Lake is a sensational trek with a relatively short climb (just under 2.5 miles round-trip) and minimal elevation gain (725 feet). Awesome views of Schroon Lake, Pharoah Mountain, and Paradox Lake await at the top. Or catch the complimentary snowshoe shuttle offered by The Lodge at Schroon Lake to Natural Stone Bridge & Caves, where you can explore over 14 miles of trails in a unique and interesting environment and then toast marshmallows over an outdoor fire before the shuttle returns to pick you up (rental snowshoes are available here if you need them.) Ice skating is another fun winter option in the area, and you'll find both maintained rinks and wild ice to choose from.

Plan a beauty of a trip only to have unexpected weather conditions? It happens. Every day isn't a perfect bluebird day, and when the weather doesn't cooperate, you can still have an awesome time. In addition to the indoor pool, The Lodge at Schroon Lake has you covered with a game room, an impressive fitness center, many cozy and comfortable spots to settle in with a good book, chat with a friend, or just put your feet up and daydream in front of a crackling fire. Beyond the lodge, there are a variety of events, activities, and adventures to discover in the region, along with great shopping nearby!

Wishing you blue skies, fresh powder, and sweet turns! While you're in the area, check out other fun eventsattractions, and other winter fun in the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub.

Adirondack Wildlife-Inspired Winter Recreation Tips

What can we learn from our native wildlife's winter adaptions?

In this exciting era of cutting-edge technical gear and adventure apparel, let's not overlook the valuable lessons nature has to offer through the behaviors of the animals around us. Take note of these fantastic fauna and their wide-ranging winter adaptations; the things you learn may just come in handy for your next winter outing!

Black bears

Black bears school us in the art of the pre-hike feast. The voracious eaters engorge themselves on berries and bugs for months, becoming lethargic once it's cold, and using all the energy they’ve stored up to get them through the winter. They don't truly hibernate in the winter, going into a period of rest called torpor, so if you see them lumbering about be sure to keep your distance! The night before a bone-chilling winter adventure, take a tip from the bear, and pair a hearty meal with a good night’s rest.

Buffalo

Okay, I know I said Adirondack wildlife, but anyone that's driven along Blue Ridge Road has likely spotted these furry friends on a hilly, green pasture. Our resident Adirondack Hub buffalo may not be running wild like the rest of the animals listed here, but those thick wooly coats they wear warn us that winter is not to be taken lightly. Layer up not just with those moisture-wicking base layers, but also the cozy fleece and poofy down jackets.

River otter

Slip-sliding around on the icy banks of our rivers and streams, diving into the freezing water, river otters know a little something about waterproofing. Their brown fur is filled with oils that keep them nearly as waterproof as the outer layer you should bring on every romp this winter! Keeping moisture away from your body is paramount, and waterproof pants, jackets, snow gaiters, and boots will keep you safe. If you're not lucky enough to spot them in the snow, travel to Tupper Lake for a glimpse of them at The Wild Center

Snowshoe hare

Need I say more? This springy species thrives in the fluffy stuff, with their large, furry feet allowing them levity in even the deepest of pow. Winter hiking in the Hub means having snowshoes (or skis!) on your own feet, preventing post holes and making your movement through the snow easier, albeit maybe not as high-speed as the hare.

Bonus: Moose and squirrels

We can learn useful nutritional lessons from the behavior of these two Adirondack animals. Similar to how squirrels store excess food, it's advisable to carry more provisions than you might initially anticipate for an adventure. However, it's essential not only to carry the food, but also to consume it actively. Just like the massive moose meandering through our winter landscapes, maintaining a constant intake of food and water is crucial, given the increased energy expenditure while walking through snow.

Although this list is helpful and light-hearted, it represents only a portion of the essential items you should bring for winter recreation. Do your research before you go anywhere, follow Leave No Trace principles, and be mindful that exploring in the winter comes with added danger. Take a look at this blog to read about preparing to hike an Adirondack High Peak in winter. Treating all of your hikes as such will ensure that you are ready for anything! While you’re in the Adirondack Hub, refuel after a winter activity at any of our cozy, local dining options.

A New Adventure: The Role of Local Guides

Ah, the Adirondacks, my favorite place to call home!

There's nothing better than the feeling of cool mountain air in your lungs and crystal-clear water on your toes. The Adirondacks create a sense of relaxation and joy that can make you forget where you are. So, it's understandable why so many call the Adirondacks their vacation destination. Typically, an Adirondack vacation involves staying in a rustic cottage on a secluded piece of property, or at a camping site reserved for tents or campers. You can take a stroll along Main Street, browsing local shops for the best Adirondack decor and gifts. Indulge in active relaxation by hiking along the many trails that span across the Adirondack Hub, paddling down the Schroon River, or kayaking on Cheney Pond.

But, have you ever considered immersing yourself more deeply in the Adirondacks to gain a greater appreciation for the natural wonders they hold?

Jamie and his team of guides offer four-season trips that cater to different interests such as snowshoeing, hiking, backpacking, paddling, fishing, and hunting.

Their guide service offers tailored hunting experiences in backcountry settings, including guided small game hunting for snowshoe hare, grouse, woodcock, and varmints. Let's not forget. Whitetail deer hunting is a highlight from late September to mid-December and is one of their most popular services. If you're looking for a fishing trip, Adirondack Mountain and Stream can customize any trip for experienced anglers and newcomers. From day-trip hunting and fishing adventures to overnight camping adventures, they have you covered.

A Fall Flavor Tour in the Adirondack Hub

Fall flavors

Fall is a magical season for the Adirondack Hub. When our friendly neighborhood giants are blanketed with rich reds and golds, and our valleys prepare for the season’s harvest, the region shines with its celebration of autumn. Our noses are also greeted with the sweet smells of delectable restaurants and breweries that can be found in every nook and cranny of the region. If you’ve been preparing your taste buds for the fall flavor tour of a lifetime, you’ve come to the right place.

The Lodge at Schroon Lake

First, no flavor tour would be complete without booking your stay in one of the premier hotels of the Adirondacks. The Lodge at Schroon Lake is a beautiful 36-acre hotel on the west shore of Schroon Lake, boasting incredible views and a sprawling property, offering everything you could dream of in an Adirondack stay. After a $21-million renovation, The Lodge at Schroon Lake contains 116 rooms, 32 of which are pet friendly, and offers lodging opportunities designed to fit your wants and needs during your stay. Choose from your own hotel room, standalone cabins and chalets, or “rough it” in their upscale glamping sites. There is plenty of space within the resort’s recreational amenities to try your hand at pickleball, paddle boarding, or even book a ride on the resort’s own Chris Craft boat!

The Brown Swan

A resident of The Lodge at Schroon Lake, the Brown Swan is the resort’s artisanal restaurant, serving up unique creations blended with hints of Adirondack comfort food. The Brown Swan is proud to source many of their ingredients locally, and offer many farm-to-table dishes, for those curious about the local harvest here in the Adirondack Hub! Start your dining experience with the Artichoke Spinach Blue Crab Dip, or the Short Rib Poutine. For your main course, break out of your comfort zone with Squid-ink Linguini, or play it safe with their NY Strip. After your meal, wander outside to the stone fire pit, or cozy up inside in the lounge.

Paradox Brewery

Paradox Brewery is a certified Veteran-owned, independent craft brewery in North Hudson, serving up delicious craft drinks year-round in a spacious brew house and tasting room. You’ll find it hard to choose between all the flavors they offer, including Beaver Bite (or its cousin Beaver Overbite), the Great Kӧlsch Affair Blood Orange, or the One Handed Applesauce Mosaic; my favorite! Pair your favorite drinks while looking out from the property onto the sprawling leaf show around you, or sip away during open mic nights with friends. The brewery also offers delicious goodies in the form of pizzas, sandwiches, a hot IPA pretzel, and poutine. In my personal opinion, there’s no better way to celebrate fall than with a craft beer and some good poutine. A staple for its unique brews, the brewery has just rebranded, with their new motto, “RoughlyRefined,” and a brand new logo! Their new facade is perfect for photo ops to give your fellow beer lovers some FOMO.

Sticks and Stones Wood Fired Bistro and Bar

If you’re in the mood for an authentic Adirondack atmosphere with good food to boot, Sticks and Stones is your place. A casual dining gallery cafe featuring fresh food and a full bar, this restaurant will transport you to the rustic dining experience you’ve been looking for. Their lunch and dinner menu is stacked with options, so picking from all the delicious choices may be a challenge! Choose from entrees like their lobster ravioli, wood fired pizzas, or burgers served up on a pretzel bun. When you’re done munching away, take a seat on the patio, or hang out by the fire inside.
